Gemma Deakin joined NICM Health Research Institute in March 2022 as the Research Management Officer. In this role she supports researchers across multiple areas of clinical focus and broad platform capabilities to pursue funding opportunities and manage research undertaken at the Institute.

Prior to joining NICM Health Research Institute, Gemma supervised undergraduate units at Western Sydney University and worked as a part of the Science Teaching and Research Technical Services team.

Gemma's research interests include biofilms, multidrug resistance and helping to facilitate health research. She is expected to complete her PhD  this year, which investigated the interactions in polymicrobial biofilms between pathogenic bacterial and fungus species. Gemma completed her Master of Research in Microbiology with a project titled “How efflux pumps affect the sensitivity of Escherichia coli biofilms to antibiotics”.
